Mushroom poisoning cases are on the rise in Bavaria, with 179 suspected incidents reported so far. Even experienced foragers are at risk, as the Bavarian health minister warns of the dangers.

Mushroom enthusiasts in Bavaria are being urged to exercise extreme caution as the region faces an increase in mushroom poisoning cases. The Bavarian Minister of Health, Judith Gerlach, announced that the Munich poison control center has already received 179 calls concerning suspected mushroom poisoning this season. This alarming number highlights the potential dangers of foraging, even for those with experience.

Chanterelles are particularly popular for mushroom pickers.

Gerlach explained that the recent warm and humid weather has led to a significant increase in mushroom growth compared to previous years. She stressed the importance of caution when foraging independently. “In Bavaria, there are about 100 species of mushrooms that are harmful to health, some of which are classified as deadly poisonous,” she emphasized. “Even experienced collectors can find it difficult to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms. No one should rely solely on mushroom identification apps.”

Storage and safety: Preventing mushroom-related health risks

Proper storage is crucial for those who collect mushrooms for home cooking. Gerlach warned that mushrooms should be stored in a cool, airy environment to prevent spoilage or the development of toxic substances. “Under no circumstances should mushrooms be stored in plastic bags,” she advised.

Foragers who experience symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, or other signs of illness after consuming mushrooms should immediately contact the Munich poison control center, which serves as a statewide contact point, or, in severe cases, call emergency services. “Never attempt to treat the symptoms with medication or home remedies,” Gerlach cautioned. “This could potentially worsen the poisoning.”

To ensure safe mushroom foraging, collectors can seek expert advice from the Bavarian Mycological Society’s website. The site provides a list of certified mushroom advisors and experts in Bavaria. These volunteers conduct inspections of collected mushrooms and offer information about different mushroom species and related poisoning risks.

Additionally, the German Mycological Society (DGfM) offers a nationwide list of mushroom experts who can provide further support. With these resources, foragers can take steps to protect themselves from the dangers of mushroom poisoning and enjoy a safe foraging experience.
