The average life expectancy at birth increased for both men and women in Germany last year. For women, it was 83.3 years, and for men, it was 78.6 years, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday, August 21.
This marks an increase of approximately 0.4 years for both genders compared to the previous year. During the pandemic years of 2020 to 2022, life expectancy had decreased by 0.6 years for both men and women compared to 2019. Although the 2019 levels have not yet been fully regained, there is a noticeable recovery trend.
Destatis explains that life expectancy at birth summarizes mortality rates across all age groups into a single value. It does not represent a forecast for current newborns but rather reflects the current survival conditions across all age groups.
