A grim discovery in eastern Germany has prompted a large-scale police operation and raised numerous questions. On Sunday afternoon, August 18, a boater found a decapitated male body in the Silo Canal near Brandenburg an der Havel. The body was floating close to the shore near the Görden Bridge.
After the discovery was reported, the section of the Silo Canal was immediately closed to ship traffic, and the shoreline was cordoned off. Police and DLRG boats were dispatched to recover the body, with the fire department also involved in the operation.
So far, police have only confirmed the recovery of the headless body, identifying it as a deceased man. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. It is still unknown whether the man died in an accident or was the victim of a crime. “This will have to be determined by forensic examinations,” a police spokeswoman told the German Press Agency.
Silo Canal in Brandenburg popular among anglers
The Silo Canal in Brandenburg is part of the federal waterway Untere Havel, connecting the lower Beetzsee to Quenzsee. The waterway is especially popular among anglers, with frequent fishing competitions held in the area.
The discovery of a decapitated body brings to mind the horrific finds in Lake Constance at the end of June, where two bodies were discovered within hours, raising similar unsettling questions.
