A shooting incident in Berlin’s Tempelhof-Schöneberg district has left one man dead and two others injured. The attack, which occurred around 1 AM on Thursday, targeted a BMW in an area known to be part of Berlin’s red-light district.
According to a spokesperson for the Berlin police, a 42-year-old man was fatally shot during the incident. The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office told the German Press Agency (dpa) that one of the injured individuals was a companion of the deceased. The other injured person might have been an uninvolved bystander, though a spokesperson for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office told t-online that this is still under investigation. The bystander is reported to be a Brazilian national.
The unknown assailant fired at least three shots at the red BMW, which was carrying two of the men. One of the injured men was shot in the leg and is considered seriously wounded. The other man sustained minor injuries.
Investigation ongoing
The crime scene at the corner of Potsdamer Straße and Bülowstraße was cordoned off extensively with police tape and guarded by officers throughout the night. The Berlin police have initiated an investigation at the scene.
The spokesperson for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that more information would likely be available later in the day. As of now, there have been no reports of any arrests in connection with the incident.
There is speculation that the man shot in the leg might have been a cyclist who happened to be at the street corner at the time of the attack. It remains unclear whether the shot man returned fire.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about violence in Berlin’s red-light district. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and identify the perpetrator.
