Ebertplatz in Cologne has come under increased scrutiny due to a series of necklace robberies by young thieves. The Eigelstein Citizens’ Association expresses concern.
It is shortly after 1 PM when the atmosphere at Ebertplatz changes. Near the subway underpass, a police car pulls up. Officers get out and check a group of teenagers. They empty their pockets, one of them has to remove his cap and show it to the officer. The teenagers cross their arms, appear uninterested in the measure, and respond to the officers’ questions listlessly and in broken German.
Ebertplatz in Cologne has made headlines in recent weeks. Alongside areas in the city center, such as the Cologne Cathedral, the square has become a hotspot for young necklace thieves. Just a few days ago, Cologne police searched residential facilities and spoke extensively about the robbery series to t-online.de.
Persistent crime at Ebertplatz
At Ebertplatz, a certain level of criminal activity seems to be always present. As they pass by, a “caretaker” from the Cologne Transport Authority (KVB) advises people to keep an eye on their valuables. The few pedestrians crossing the square on this Tuesday, who are not part of the local drug and drinking scene, express critical views about Ebertplatz. “Whenever I have to pass through here, my mood darkens,” says a young man with headphones, hurrying past. An elderly couple mentions reading about the necklace robbers in the newspaper and are worried. However, they note that the situation at the square has been deteriorating for years.
The Eigelstein Citizens’ Association is also monitoring developments at Ebertplatz with concern. The incidents of necklace snatching at Ebertplatz have recently been a major topic within the association, says spokesperson Ruth Wennemar. She believes, “When young people commit crimes, the justice system must definitely get involved.”
Calls for mobile police station
In the past, the Citizens’ Association has repeatedly called for a mobile police station to be set up at Ebertplatz, but without success. Such a mobile station is not feasible according to the authorities, Wennemar explains.
The numerous incidents at Ebertplatz have had a significant impact on the city’s reputation, the spokesperson adds. “If necklace thefts occur every day or several times a week, it affects tourism – and that’s not good for Cologne.” Concepts to combat the rising crime at Ebertplatz need to be developed by the city or the police. “As a citizens’ association, we can only appeal.”
