As the Paris Olympics draw to a close, Thomas Müller, who avidly followed the games, expresses a wish for Germany to host the Olympics again.
As the Paris Olympics conclude today, one of the most enthusiastic spectators was football star Thomas Müller. While he played on the field during the recent UEFA European Championship, Müller watched the Olympics as a fan, particularly invested in the equestrian events. His horse, “Checker 47,” co-owned with Christian Kukuk, won gold in show jumping.
Müller shared his thoughts on the Olympics in a post on LinkedIn, expressing admiration for the athletes’ performances at iconic locations like the Eiffel Tower and Château de Versailles. “The achievements of the athletes in these incredible venues captivated me,” said the 2014 World Cup champion.
He was particularly inspired by those who embodied the Olympic spirit. Müller encouraged his followers to carry the values of sport into daily life and took the opportunity to voice a hope for the future: “Maybe this enthusiasm will spark the courage to bring the Olympic Games back to Germany. I would be thrilled, even if I might have gray hair by then.”
Germany’s Olympic ambitions: 2036 or 2040?
The last time Germany hosted the Olympics was in 1972, with the Munich Winter Games now over 50 years ago. Discussions about a new bid are growing louder. Olympic discus champion Robert Harting previously advocated for the 2036 Summer Games to be held in Berlin, marking 100 years since the controversial 1936 Nazi Olympics.
While Germany has yet to submit a bid, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed support for a 2040 bid, stating in Paris that the federal government would strongly back such an effort, in collaboration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). However, the DOSB is also considering a bid for 2036, keeping options open for when Germany might once again host the Olympics.
