The body of Ernst Marcus Maurer, a German doctor missing since July 31, has been discovered in Italy. A mountain rescue unit located the remains after more than a month of searching.
A spokesperson for the mountain rescue service of the Italian police authority Guardia di finanza confirmed that the missing German Charité doctor, Ernst Marcus Maurer, has been found dead. A patrol of the mountain rescue service discovered the body on the morning of the announcement in the area of Alpe Pizzocca in Italy.
According to the newspaper “La Stampa”, Maurer’s body was found under several tree trunks in a stream. Maurer was the managing director of the Institute for Allergology at Berlin’s Charité hospital. Initial findings suggest that the body was washed to this location by rain.
The 58-year-old physician from Berlin had set out for a hike on Monte Giove and never returned, prompting his family to raise the alarm.
Challenging recovery operation
For several days, numerous rescue teams had been searching for the missing doctor. The rescue crews, including firefighters and civil protection units, combed the area intensively. Official search operations had recently been suspended, but mountain rescuers continued their daily efforts and eventually found the deceased.
The recovery of the body was carried out by helicopter and was challenging due to the difficult terrain. The body was first transported to a sports field and then to a hospital.
This tragic discovery brings closure to the search for Dr. Maurer, while raising questions about the circumstances of his disappearance and death in the Italian mountains.
