A vacation drama involving a Berlin professor: Charité doctor Marcus Maurer went hiking, and now his family is desperately searching for him.
Renowned German allergist Marcus Maurer has been missing in Italy for a month. The 58-year-old professor from Berlin’s Charité disappeared on July 31 during a family vacation in San Bartolomeo. According to Italian media reports, Maurer set out early in the morning for a hike on Monte Giove, located in the northwest part of Lake Maggiore.
His mobile phone was last detected on the Swiss phone network before his trail went cold. Despite extensive search efforts by Italian rescue teams, including the deployment of a helicopter with a thermal imaging camera, the search has been unsuccessful.
Case echoes search for British doctor in Greece
Maurer’s family has now taken matters into their own hands. They have launched a call for help on Facebook, offering 3,000 euros for information leading to the doctor’s discovery. Maurer, who serves as the executive director of the Institute for Allergology at Charité, was on vacation with his wife, brother, and daughter at the time of his disappearance.
The case brings to mind the disappearance of British doctor and TV presenter Michael Mosley earlier this year. Mosley went missing after a hike on a Greek holiday island and was later found dead. Investigations into Maurer’s whereabouts are ongoing. There are currently no clues about his location or the circumstances of his disappearance.
