A special €2 coin depicting Aachen Cathedral is being sold on eBay for an astonishing €10,500. This significant price increase is due to a rare minting error that has made the coin particularly valuable to collectors.
The rare coin and its historical significance
A €2 coin, currently listed on the online marketplace eBay, is drawing attention for its extraordinary asking price of nearly €10,500. At first glance, the coin appears like any other in circulation. However, the reverse side features the octagon of Aachen Cathedral and the monogram signature of Charlemagne, making it unique.
The German Federal Government commissioned this coin to honor Charlemagne, the King of the Franks and a prominent figure in Aachen’s history, on the occasion of his birthday. The Deutsche Bundesbank noted that the year 2023 marked the 1,275th anniversary of Charlemagne’s birth, and the coin was issued as part of the celebration. The reverse side was designed by Berlin-based artist Tobias Winnen.
According to the collectors’ platform Münzen.eu, 20 million of these special Charlemagne coins were released into circulation on March 30, 2023. Initially, the coin was valued at around €3 by the portal.
Error coins fetching high prices
While some of these commemorative coins are listed on eBay for prices ranging from €2.40 to €10, those with minting errors are commanding significantly higher prices. Due to strict quality controls during the minting process, errors are rare, making these flawed coins highly sought after by collectors.
These error coins are being offered on eBay for prices ranging from €3,000 to €10,499, depending on the nature of the flaw. The rarity and unique characteristics of these coins drive their value far above their original face value.
