When the father of the family sees the price of the fries, he can hardly find the words.

In many places, prices in restaurants have risen dramatically. At a German holiday resort, guests now have to dig deep into their pockets for a popular snack.

For many people, chips are a must-have snack on vacation – this soul food tastes particularly good after a long day on the beach. However, anyone who wants to treat themselves to chips at one of the beach stalls will have to dig deep into their pockets this year.

But it’s not just the prices of French fries that have risen dramatically this year.

Baltic Sea: Prices for French fries outrage holiday-makers

A father who was on holiday with his wife and two children at Timmendorfer Strand on the Baltic Sea also had the French fries experience.

A portion of French fries with mayonnaise and ketchup

He wanted to buy fries with mayo and ketchup for himself and his family at a beach stall – but when he saw the prices, his appetite disappeared. The man vented his anger on Facebook: “Information for holidaymakers on the Baltic Sea, pure extortion!” he begins his post.

“A portion of fries with ketchup and mayo costs a whopping 7 euros on Timmendorfer Strand. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s speechless!” complains the vacationer. “Four fries for a family with 2 kids = 28 euros! That’s extortion!”

In the comments, many share the holidaymaker’s opinion: “Is there a gold edge sewn in somewhere?” asks one user. Others can understand the increased prices, especially in tourist hotspots: “Timmendorfer Strand is comparable to Sylt or Norderney. It’s just the way it is.”

“If it’s too expensive, then you don’t have to buy it? And Timmendorfer Strand has never been a cheap holiday destination,” agrees another user.

It is well known that food prices have risen in recent years. The purchase price of potatoes has also risen due to a poorer harvest in Germany and Europe .

In addition, there are other expenses that restaurateurs have: “Nobody works for the minimum wage of 12.50 euros anymore. With additional wage costs, they pay 15.00 euros an hour. Then the rent, then GEMA, insurance, BG contributions, shopping, costs for tax advisors, etc.,” one user calculates in the comments.

Open-air pool fries: This is how much the snack costs in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)

The average price for a portion of fries in Germany is around five euros – this is shown by a study by HelloFresh. The most expensive portion tested cost 6.90 euros, the cheapest two euros. This means that the price of fries in Timmendorfer Strand is significantly above average.

But here in NRW, too, the prices for this popular snack have risen significantly. As the newspaper Kölner Stadtanzeiger reported, visitors to Cologne’s Lentpark swimming pool also had to pay seven euros for a French fry last year – without mayo and ketchup. The Cologne swimming pool was thus at the top of the list of the most expensive outdoor pool French fries in NRW.

In other outdoor pools, visitors pay significantly less, as the travel magazine HolidayCheck reports.

In Düsseldorf, the price for a portion of fries is between 3.50 euros and five euros. Guests of outdoor pools in Bonn and Wuppertal can get cheap fries – a portion costs just under three euros in both cities.
