Bavaria is keen to attract more foreign students as future professionals. Nearly 15,000 international students are currently studying computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering in the region. Businesses in Bavaria are urgently seeking well-qualified young talent, particularly in the scientific and technical fields, according to Bertram Brossardt, Managing Director of the Association of Bavarian Businesses.

High dropout rates among foreign students

However, there is concern about the high dropout rates among international students, with 41 percent of bachelor’s students and 28 percent of master’s students leaving their studies prematurely. Most international students come from Asia, with over 8,000 each from India and China. Nearly 6,000 students come from Turkey, while Austria and Italy each contribute about 3,000 students.

Demographic challenges and shifting student demographics

“Due to demographic changes, we will be short of about 400,000 workers in Bavaria by 2035, and this trend is also evident in university lecture halls,” says Brossardt. The number of students with German passports has decreased, while the number of international students has increased.
