Internal communications reveal widespread dissatisfaction among Deutsche Bahn staff, highlighting severe operational issues and a deteriorating work environment.

Deutsche Bahn employees vent frustration in leaked chats
Staff members of German railway company Deutsche Bahn work at a platform of the central train station in Berlin.

Recent leaked internal chats from Deutsche Bahn employees paint a picture of mounting frustration and despair within the company. As reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, these communications provide insight into the challenges faced by staff members in their day-to-day operations.

One train attendant described the current situation as “embarrassing” and “a tragedy.” They detailed issues such as lack of air conditioning in trains and insufficient supplies in on-board bistros, even on major routes like Berlin-Basel. The employee warned that the thin staffing levels would likely drive away the remaining workers.

Operational challenges and staff concerns

The leaked chats reveal a range of problems plaguing Deutsche Bahn:

  • Faulty air conditioning in ICE trains
  • Inadequate supplies for on-board catering
  • Poor internal communication
  • Understaffing on trains

One employee wrote, “It’s getting worse every day, and there’s always less staff on the trains.” The messages indicate that not only passengers but also the company’s own workforce is increasingly frustrated with the conditions at Deutsche Bahn.

The situation is further exacerbated by plans to cut 30,000 jobs. One employee reacted strongly, stating, “As always, it’s the ground-level staff who have to clean up the mess.”

Employees also report that criticism of operational procedures is increasingly unwelcome. Those who raise issues are reportedly told they can look for new jobs at the employment agency. “Some people change their tune, others are muzzled or asked to leave,” wrote one employee.

The leaked communications underscore the urgent need for changes “both in external operations and internally,” as expressed by one staff member. As Deutsche Bahn grapples with these internal challenges, the impact on both employee morale and customer service quality remains a significant concern for the German rail operator.
