Dyson’s heavy Ontrac headphones blend design and function

Dyson, known for its vacuum cleaners, has ventured into the headphone market with its new model, the Ontrac. Following the quirky introduction of its Dyson Zone headphones, which combined air purification with audio, Dyson’s latest offering continues its trend of innovation—though it brings a significant weight increase.

The Ontrac headphones weigh 450 grams, nearly half a kilogram, which is considerably heavier than many competitors. Dyson achieves this weight through a clever design: two batteries are embedded in the headband, and the soft microfiber ear cushions ensure a comfortable fit despite the heft.

The Ontrac’s controls are straightforward. The left side features a power button and a Bluetooth pairing button, while the right side has a mini joystick for controlling music and volume. Switching between noise cancellation and transparency modes is done via a double-tap on the headphones. Thankfully, Dyson uses an accelerometer for this function, so users don’t need to touch sensitive surfaces.

The sound quality of the Ontrac is detailed and warm. Dyson claims a frequency range from 6 Hz to 21 kHz, wider than the usual 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The 40-mm drivers contribute to a broad sound spectrum. The headphones come with a smartphone app for both Android and iOS, offering an equalizer with three modes: one highlighting high frequencies and vocals, another enhancing bass, and a neutral mode preferred by many users.

However, the app’s additional features, such as noise level data, might not be particularly useful for most users. The noise cancellation is effective but does not match the capabilities of Sonos Ace or Sony WH-1000XM5 models.

On the other hand, the transparency mode is well-executed, maintaining Dyson’s characteristic “wump” sound when switching noise cancellation modes, which mimics the sound of a vacuum cleaner—a fitting touch for the brand.

Dyson hopes to replicate Nokia’s success with its customizable design approach. Just as Nokia’s interchangeable covers allowed users to personalize their phones, Dyson’s Ontrac offers easy-to-change ear cushions and end caps in seven colors. More than 2000 color combinations are available for personalizing the headphones. The Ontrac is priced at €499, with ear cushions and end caps sold separately for €49 each.
