Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, has been arrested once more, this time in Copenhagen during an anti-Israel protest. The 21-year-old was detained while participating in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the Danish capital.
Greta Thunberg was apprehended by police while protesting in front of a university building in Copenhagen. She was seen wearing a Palestinian scarf around her neck, as captured in photos by Danish newspapers “Politiken” and “Ekstra Bladet,” and in a video shared on Instagram by the event’s organizers. Supporters repeatedly shouted “You are not alone!” to Thunberg as she was led away.
The Copenhagen police confirmed the arrest of six demonstrators but did not confirm if Thunberg was among them. The police reported that those arrested were accused of trespassing, as stated on the social media platform X.
Thunberg calls for academic boycott of Israeli universities
In her Instagram story, Thunberg posted videos from the protest, which took place in front of the administrative building of the University of Copenhagen (KU). She explained that the protest aimed to push the university to cease all collaborations with Israeli universities due to the Gaza conflict. Thunberg’s call for an academic boycott is supported by the group “Studerende mod Besættelsen” (Students Against the Occupation), which organized the demonstration. The university’s administrative and museum buildings are located in central Copenhagen, close to the city’s large synagogue.
Thunberg’s continued activism
Greta Thunberg, who gained global fame for her “school strike for climate,” has continued to use her platform to highlight issues beyond climate change. Since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, she has frequently drawn attention to the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza through her social media presence. Thunberg has been arrested several times during protests in various countries, primarily related to climate issues. Notably, she was also detained by police in Malmö, Sweden, in May during a demonstration against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.
