Hamburg is establishing a new large-scale refugee accommodation in the Bahrenfeld district. The facility, located in a former Selgros market, will house up to 650 people and is part of the city’s response to the ongoing need for refugee housing.
Facility details and planning
The planned accommodation will be situated at Tasköprüstraße 10, west of Neue Mitte Altona and beyond the railway tracks. The Social Services Authority has been pursuing the plan to use the vacant market building, empty since the beginning of the year, as emergency accommodation for refugees. While negotiations with the property owner were still ongoing in early August, they appear to have been concluded now.
The space will be organized as follows:
- The hall will be divided into “compartments” using partition walls
- These spaces will be open-topped but provide some privacy
- Sanitary containers will be installed around the building
Meeting growing accommodation needs
This new facility is one of many recently created housing spaces by the Social Services Authority. Current statistics show:
- Approximately 47,000 people are housed in public accommodations
- Existing facilities are at 97% capacity
- Refugee arrivals in Hamburg remain high
