The annual Magnifest in Braunschweig attracted large crowds over the weekend, with 180,000 visitors filling the streets. Police described the atmosphere as positive and peaceful despite the high turnout.
Large crowds and festive atmosphere
The Magnifest, a beloved tradition in Braunschweig, brought lively music and festive crowds to the city’s Altstadtviertel this past weekend. According to police estimates, approximately 180,000 visitors attended the event, surpassing the expected 150,000 by 30,000. The streets, lined with food and vendor stalls, were bustling with people enjoying the festivities until late into the evening.
Despite the large number of attendees, the event remained calm and celebratory. A police spokesperson said: “From a police perspective, the Magnifest was peaceful and relaxed. The mood could be described as cheerful and festive.”
Minor incidents reported on Friday
While the overall atmosphere was positive, there were a few minor incidents on Friday evening related to excessive alcohol consumption. Some attendees became involved in disputes, but police officers, who had increased their presence compared to previous years, managed these situations without the need for further intervention.
Additionally, a ban on glass bottles and weapons in the Magniviertel was largely respected by festival-goers, contributing to the smooth operation of the event.
No bag checks at the event
Although many visitors carried backpacks, the police did not conduct any bag checks. The police spokesperson clarified that such measures were not planned for the event but could be implemented if necessary for public safety or criminal investigations.
“Searches, including bag checks, can only be carried out when necessary for crime prevention or law enforcement,” the spokesperson explained, expressing overall satisfaction with how the event unfolded.
