On Monday afternoon, a man at Essen’s main train station caused an emergency stop by holding onto a departing train and running alongside it. During the subsequent police check, officers discovered drugs on him.
At around 12:50 PM, the Essen Federal Police were alerted to a dangerous interference with rail traffic at Essen’s main station. The 53-year-old man was reportedly holding onto a departing Flixtrain on platform 1 and ran several meters alongside it. A 22-year-old witness, who noticed the situation, pulled the train’s emergency brake. Federal police were then called to the scene. Since the man could not provide any identification, he was taken to the police station to confirm his identity.
At the station, officers searched the homeless man for identification documents. While no documents were found, a small amount of narcotics was discovered. The man’s identity was eventually confirmed through his verbal statements and subsequent data checks. An alcohol breath test also revealed that the 53-year-old was intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of 0.82 per mille.
Video footage from surveillance cameras confirmed the incident. No injuries were reported.
Due to the man’s erratic behavior, police requested an ambulance. After a medical evaluation by paramedics, the 53-year-old was taken to a hospital for further assessment.
The Federal Police seized the drugs and initiated an investigation for dangerous interference with rail traffic and a violation of drug laws.
