The body of Narin Güran, an 8-year-old girl missing for three weeks, has been discovered in southeastern Turkey. The child’s remains were found in a sack hidden in a river, sparking nationwide outrage and calls for justice.
Search ends in tragedy
After an extensive three-week search, the body of 8-year-old Narin Güran has been found in Turkey’s Diyarbakır province. Provincial Governor Murat Zorluoğlu reported that the child’s remains were discovered about a kilometer from her home village. The police had launched a massive search operation following the girl’s disappearance, employing divers and sniffer dogs in their efforts.
Zorluoğlu provided grim details about the discovery: “According to initial findings, she was murdered and placed in a sack. The sack was then put in the river and concealed under branches and stones to avoid suspicion.”
Investigation and arrests
The prosecutor’s office in Diyarbakır has detained 21 individuals in connection with Narin’s disappearance and death. Among the suspects is the girl’s uncle, who is under investigation for murder. Turkish television reports also indicate that Narin’s parents and brother have been taken into custody.
Narin was last seen on August 21 at 3:15 PM, as captured by surveillance cameras at her Quran school. The footage shows her walking with four friends before separating to take a mountain path home. Her father reported her missing around 8 PM that evening when she failed to return from her Quran course.
National response
The case has garnered nationwide attention and sympathy. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his shock at the news: “We are all deeply saddened by the fate of Narin, who was brutally murdered.” He vowed to follow the case closely to ensure that those responsible receive the harshest punishment.
Women’s rights activists and the pro-Kurdish opposition party DEM have called for demonstrations in response to the tragedy. The case has reignited discussions about child safety and violence against minors in Turkey.
