The ÖDP and Munich List political groups have proposed a pilot project in Munich’s city council to designate a lane on the Mittlerer Ring exclusively for electric vehicles (EVs) and buses. The proposed lane, running between Dachauer Straße and Arnulfstraße, would allow a speed limit of 50 km/h, instead of the current 30 km/h. Additionally, the proposal suggests permitting EVs to use bus lanes throughout the city.
Exclusive lane for EVs on Munich’s Mittlerer Ring: Politicians inspired by BMW chief’s suggestion
The city council members reference an interview by BMW’s Head of Production, Milan Nedeljkovic, with their media group. In the interview, Nedeljkovic suggested making EVs more attractive by granting them “privileged access to city centers, free parking spaces, or dedicated lanes on highways.” According to him, such incentives could promote the adoption of EVs without relying on restrictive measures.
The ÖDP and Munich List politicians have embraced this idea and are pushing for its implementation through a traffic pilot project on the Mittlerer Ring. They highlight experiences from France and Norway, where similar “Blue Lanes” have been introduced, showing that such measures can enhance the acceptance and spread of EVs.
ÖDP leader Tobias Ruff: “Dedicated lane for buses and EVs is a crucial step”
“We want to demonstrate with this pilot project that Munich is ready to explore new avenues for climate-friendly mobility,” said ÖDP leader Tobias Ruff. He emphasized that merely talking about a transportation shift isn’t enough; the city must take concrete actions. “The release of a lane for buses and EVs on Landshuter Allee is a crucial step in promoting environmentally friendly transportation and speeding up public transit. Experiences from other countries show that such initiatives can also reduce CO₂ and pollutant emissions.”
