Family-friendly outdoor movies come to Kurpark.
“Lights, camera, action!” is the new motto in Fischbachau’s Kurpark. Martin Pellkofer and Vincent Hille are hosting an open-air cinema event for the whole family. And the big screen experience won’t be the only highlight of this community gathering.
A community effort brings cinema under the stars
On Friday and Saturday, the Kurpark in Fischbachau, a picturesque town in Upper Bavaria, will be transformed into an outdoor movie theater. Organizers Martin Pellkofer and Vincent Hille have invited the entire community to enjoy family-friendly films under the stars. But the event offers more than just movies. Numerous local clubs and organizations are participating with stands and demonstrations, and two live acts will provide musical entertainment.
In an interview, Pellkofer explains how the idea came about and why spreading out a picnic blanket will be worth it for attendees.
From coffee talk to community event
When asked if the idea for the open-air cinema originated at a local pub, Pellkofer laughs, “In a way, yes. In our case, though, it was at a coffee gathering. Every Saturday, I set up my mobile coffee bar, ‘CaféRadl,’ at the Fischbachau weekly market. It’s easy to strike up conversations with people there. We first thought about organizing an outdoor cinema in the Kurpark about three years ago.”
Pellkofer explains that the delay in implementation was due to initial lack of time and money. “You need a certain buffer to be able to pull something like this off. Now it’s available – thanks in part to the success of CaféRadl. Fortunately, we’ve gained so many supporters through our network, including many local clubs, that what started as the idea of watching movies together in a small group has now become a two-day event with an extensive program for the whole family.”
Family-friendly film selection and impressive setup
The film selection reflects the family-oriented nature of the event. “‘Wochenendrebellen’ (Weekend Rebels) on Friday and ‘Pumuckl’ on Saturday offer good entertainment for all age groups,” Pellkofer says. Both films will start around 9 p.m. when it’s dark enough. The organizers have borrowed a six-by-four-meter screen and all the necessary technology from an acquaintance. “We’re setting it up at the music pavilion so that viewers can spread out on picnic blankets in the meadow in front of it,” Pellkofer explains.
More than just movies
Pellkofer encourages attendees to arrive early, not just to secure a good spot but also to enjoy the diverse program. “On Friday, Dubtrain will perform, and on Saturday, things kick off at 3 p.m. with children’s dance groups, the Crossover Team from Schliersee, and live punk music from VOI,” he says. Various local organizations, including the Fischbachau kindergarten, the Elbach primary school support association, the Fischbachau fire department, and the Leitzachtal ski club, will be providing food and refreshments.
“It’s really great that so many have joined our idea,” Pellkofer enthuses. “This kind of event is very important, especially for small towns like Fischbachau. Of course, we’re also happy to welcome visitors from other communities.”
A potential annual tradition
When asked if this could become an annual event, Pellkofer doesn’t rule out the possibility. “It’s certainly not out of the question. But for now, we’re looking forward to the premiere, hopefully with good weather. If it does rain, we can move to the Klostersaal (monastery hall).”
