On Friday, October 4, legal proceedings commenced against a 31-year-old mother and 35-year-old father. According to the prosecution, the couple allowed their baby boy to die in a toilet after birth in July 2022 in the Brandenburg capital city. The court spokesperson stated that both parents are charged with manslaughter by omission.

The indictment revealed that the woman gave birth to a fully developed and viable baby in their shared apartment. Subsequently, she left the newborn unattended, head-down in the toilet bowl. The child ultimately died from circulatory failure accompanied by respiratory distress.

The mother’s partner, who is also facing charges as a co-defendant, allegedly failed to help his son. He only called for an ambulance when his partner lost consciousness, apparently due to complications from the birth. Emergency responders discovered the boy but were unable to save him. The trial is scheduled to continue until early January.
