Due to his transition to the European Parliament, authorities were forced to temporarily halt their investigation into AfD politician Petr Bystron. To resume the investigation, they are now turning to the Parliament.
In connection with the money laundering and bribery investigation against AfD politician Petr Bystron, the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested the European Parliament to lift his immunity. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, following a report by the “Augsburger Allgemeine.”
The parliamentarian is suspected of receiving money in connection with the pro-Russian portal “Voice of Europe” to act in the Bundestag in favor of Russia. Bystron has consistently denied the allegations against him, calling the proceedings politically motivated. The presumption of innocence applies until the case is legally concluded.
The Bundestag lifted Bystron’s immunity in May, leading to several search operations. After Bystron’s transition to the European Parliament, investigators were forced to take a mandatory break. With his new mandate as an EU parliamentarian, Bystron, who ran in the election in the second spot on the AfD’s list, once again enjoys immunity. Further investigations can only proceed if the European Parliament decides to lift Bystron’s immunity.
