A video of a violent attack is circulating on social media. The incident took place over the weekend on a public bus, with potential involvement of far-right extremists.
Police in Gifhorn, Lower Saxony, launched two criminal investigations on Saturday evening for mutual bodily harm. According to a spokesperson, the investigations involve multiple suspects. The incident began around 7:40 p.m. on Saturday when an argument broke out between two sisters and a group of young men on the bus.
At one bus stop, the situation escalated into a physical altercation. Fortunately, a police vehicle was directly behind the bus at the time, allowing officers to intervene swiftly and stop the fight. They proceeded to take the personal details of all parties involved.
Initial investigations suggest that those involved sustained only minor injuries, although one person was kicked repeatedly in the head and torso.
The Gifhorn police are in possession of a video, which is also circulating on social media. It shows parts of the altercation as well as the police intervention. However, the motive and background of the conflict remain unclear at this time.
Local Left Party claims Nazi assault
The Gifhorn branch of the Left Party responded to the incident on Facebook, claiming the attack was a “Nazi assault,” during which the perpetrators “repeatedly kicked their victim despite police presence.” The statement also mentioned that several Nazis had traveled to Gifhorn after attending the Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Wolfsburg. According to the party, the far-right group was accompanied by police at both locations.
City councillor criticizes police response
Sandra Zecchino, a Left Party city councillor, expressed further concerns, stating that the police had assured her the far-right group would not be allowed to roam freely in Gifhorn. She also reported that some of the attackers were local residents.
Zecchino claimed to have seen the video herself, describing how “at least four Nazis chased a victim off the bus and repeatedly kicked them while they were on the ground.” She added, “The police only intervened after several kicks to the head.” The councillor criticized the authorities, questioning how such a violent attack could occur despite police presence: “It is unacceptable that the police were accompanying a group of Nazis, and yet a severe violent assault still took place.”
