Over 5,000 people are employed at the Bundeswehr site in Cologne-Wahn, which is now under investigation for possible sabotage. The incident has extended to a NATO base in Geilenkirchen.

The Bundeswehr barracks in Cologne-Wahn were sealed off on Wednesday morning, August 14 due to concerns of water contamination, with sabotage suspected. Later, the NATO base in Geilenkirchen was also sealed off after similar concerns arose. A spokesperson from the Territorial Command confirmed the situation, noting that an investigation is ongoing.

Earlier, a Ministry of Defense spokesperson confirmed that the Cologne-Wahn barracks were sealed off due to suspected sabotage and a possible intrusion attempt. Authorities, including the State Security and investigative agencies, have been involved, but further details remain undisclosed.

When asked about potential injuries, the Ministry of Defense declined to comment. The Territorial Command expressed well-wishes for any Bundeswehr personnel possibly affected by the incident, hoping for a swift and complete recovery. The newspaper Spiegel was the first to report on the closure of the barracks.

Investigators at the Cologne-Wahn Bundeswehr barracks are currently probing a potential sabotage incident. According to the Spiegel, the site’s tap water might be contaminated. As a result, the barracks have been sealed off since Wednesday morning, with soldiers and staff urgently advised not to use the tap water.

The Cologne-Wahn Air Force barracks, near Cologne Airport, host several command authorities and various military and civilian Bundeswehr offices. Approximately 4,300 soldiers and 1,200 civilian employees work at the site, which also houses parts of the air transport unit responsible for long-distance military and medical transport worldwide.
