After a duel, an SV Elversberg player crashes to the ground. His pain is so severe afterward that he receives anesthesia.
The players of SV Elversberg have responded to the severe injury of their teammate Florian Le Joncour with an emotional post following their second division match. They shared a photo on the messaging service X, showing the players posing with Le Joncour’s jersey. The caption read: “For you, Florian!”
The defender was injured during the 4-0 (2-0) victory against SV Darmstadt 98 after an unfortunate fall onto his forearm following a header duel. He was severely injured, had to be treated for several minutes while lying in the penalty area, and was taken to the hospital. The pain was reportedly so intense that the 29-year-old had to be anesthetized on the field. “It was a situation that shook us all,” said Darmstadt’s coach Torsten Lieberknecht, who also sent “best recovery wishes” on behalf of his club.
As of Saturday evening, an official diagnosis was not yet available. However, Sports Director Nils-Ole Book told the “Bild” newspaper, after speaking with the medical team, that it did not appear to be a fracture. “It seems likely that all the ligaments in his elbow are torn. We expect a longer recovery period. We hope he can avoid surgery,” Book explained. An MRI is scheduled for Monday.
Darmstadt’s decline continues
Stewards shielded Le Joncour with blankets while doctors and staff treated him. He was carried off the field to applause from the spectators and taken out of the stadium by ambulance. The match was interrupted from the 64th minute for over 20 minutes but had already been decided in favor of Elversberg by that point: Luca Schnellbacher (5th minute) and Fisnik Asllani (20th/59th) had already scored three goals for the hosts. Elversberg’s Filimon Gerezgiher sealed the game with his first goal (90th minute) to make it 4-0 against an overwhelmed opponent.
For Darmstadt, the downward spiral continues unabated. This is the Lilies’ third defeat in their fourth match of the 2. Bundesliga season. Across seasons, it is even their eighth winless game, following their relegation from the Bundesliga last season.
The coming days are likely to be uncomfortable for coach Torsten Lieberknecht. The former Bundesliga team is now in the relegation zone with a goal difference of 2:10. In two weeks, Darmstadt will host Lieberknecht’s former club, Eintracht Braunschweig, in what could already be his decisive match.
