The water quality of Unterbacher See, Düsseldorf’s only official bathing lake, has once again been rated as “excellent” based on data from the past four years, despite recent challenges with algae and sunscreen film on the surface.

To ensure water quality for visitors to the 88-hectare biotope in southern Düsseldorf, independent laboratory tests are conducted at least every two weeks during the bathing season. These tests follow specific analytics prescribed by the health department and adhere to EU bathing water directives and North Rhine-Westphalia’s bathing water regulations.

Key aspects of water quality monitoring:

  • Testing for indicators: Samples are analyzed for indicators such as E. coli bacteria, which can signal contamination.
  • Annual on-site inspection: The health department collaborates with the city’s Office for Environmental and Consumer Protection to conduct yearly inspections during the bathing season.
  • Comprehensive water column analysis: Twice a year, the entire water column of Unterbacher See undergoes extensive testing by the Chemical-Biological Laboratories of the City Drainage Company to assess the ecological condition of the water body.

Unterbacher See is a scenic lake located in Düsseldorf, known for its recreational activities such as swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and camping. This lake is surrounded by the Eller forest, offering a beautiful natural setting for hiking and picnicking. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking to enjoy outdoor activities and relax by the water.

Recent challenges and consistent quality

Despite recent observations of algae and a film of sunscreen on the water’s surface during hot summer days, the overall water quality remains excellent. This rating is based on a four-year data analysis, demonstrating the lake’s consistent high standards.

The “excellent” rating for Unterbacher See (Unterbacher Lake) reaffirms its status as a safe and enjoyable recreational spot for Düsseldorf residents and visitors. While temporary surface issues may occur, the underlying water quality continues to meet stringent European and regional standards, ensuring a reliable option for those seeking refreshment on hot days.

This comprehensive approach to water quality monitoring and maintenance highlights the importance placed on public health and environmental standards in recreational water management. As Unterbacher See continues to be a popular destination, these regular assessments provide valuable reassurance to the public about the safety and quality of this natural resource.
