Audi’s Italy director, Fabrizio Longo, tragically lost his life during a mountain hike in the Italian Alps. His fatal fall occurred near the summit of the Adamello mountain range.
Fabrizio Longo, the director of Audi Italy, died in a tragic accident while hiking in the Italian Alps on Saturday, August 31. The incident took place in the Adamello mountain range, which boasts the largest number of glaciers in the Italian Alps. Located in the northern province of Brescia, the range is about 40 kilometers from Lake Garda.
According to reports from the Italian news agency Ansa, Longo was hiking alone on a via ferrata, a protected climbing route, that leads to the summit. While near the Payer peak at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters, Longo fell. A fellow climber who witnessed the fall immediately called for help. Although mountain rescue teams arrived quickly and found Longo 200 meters below the summit, they were unable to save him. The 62-year-old Audi director was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mourning the loss of an experienced mountaineer and Audi leader
Fabrizio Longo was well-known as an avid mountain enthusiast and experienced climber. “He had a great passion for the mountains,” said Flavio Roda, president of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), in a statement to Ansa. Roda expressed deep sorrow over Longo’s death, describing the news as “terrible.” He also highlighted the long-standing and fruitful collaboration they had shared with Longo over the years.
Born in Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic coast in 1962, Longo began his career in the automotive industry in 1987 with Fiat. He later held positions at Lancia, Aprilia, Toyota, BMW, and Hyundai before joining Audi in 2013, where he served as the director of Audi Italy.
The tragic accident adds to a series of recent fatal incidents in the mountains. A daring climber recently fell to his death in Tyrol, and the body of another mountaineer was discovered in the Allgäu Alps not long ago.
