A German hiker has been buried by an avalanche in the Karwendel Mountains in Tyrol, Austria. Rescue efforts have been hampered by poor weather conditions and safety concerns for the rescue team.
In the Karwendel Mountains of Tyrol, Austria, a hiker from Bavaria has been buried by an avalanche. Rescue teams have detected a signal within the avalanche debris field but have been unable to recover the individual. Due to the danger posed to rescuers, the search had to be suspended on Saturday.
Adverse weather conditions have complicated the recovery efforts. Fog made it impossible for helicopters to fly from the Austrian side. Eventually, a German helicopter managed to reach the area.
Hiker part of German trekking group
The man was part of a group of 30 German hikers. The other members of the group were safely brought down to the valley. According to the police, the search is scheduled to resume on Sunday, weather conditions permitting.
The avalanche occurred in the municipality of Vomp, near the Oswald hut close to the German border. Rescue teams could only reach the area on foot. Mountain rescuers from Achenkirch in Austria and Lenggries in Bavaria, along with search dogs, were deployed at the site.
