A legacy in the Bundesliga

Willi Lemke was one of the most well-known figures in the Bundesliga for many years. As the former manager of Werder Bremen, Lemke’s influence and contributions to the club were significant. His passing marks the end of an era for both the club and German football. Werder Bremen’s President, Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, expressed his deep sadness over the loss, stating, “Willi Lemke belongs to the greatest Werder Bremen personalities of all time. The news of his sudden death has shocked us and made us deeply sad.”

Remembered for his passion and leadership

Lemke’s legacy is characterized by his innovative, passionate, and ambitious personality. He was known for his determination and his ability to engage in debates, yet he remained approachable and conciliatory. Dr. Hess-Grunewald emphasized that few individuals are as closely associated with Werder Bremen as Lemke, highlighting his exceptional and exemplary influence, both within the club and beyond. “He was a global citizen who always remained a Hanseatic,” Hess-Grunewald noted. The club’s thoughts are with Lemke’s family during this difficult time.

Willi Lemke’s relationship with Werder Bremen began in 1975, and he served as the club’s successful manager from 1981 to 1999. His decades-long dedication to the club has left an indelible mark on both Werder Bremen and the Bundesliga as a whole.
