After July protests by “Last Generation” activists, Frankfurt Airport reports a €1 million loss and plans to sue the activists for the incurred costs.
Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport estimates a loss of €1 million due to the protest by climate activists at the end of July. “We will sue these people for the losses,” said CFO Matthias Zieschang during a conference with financial analysts on Tuesday.
On July 25, seven activists from the group “Last Generation” entered the airport grounds and blocked runways to highlight the environmental impact of flying. The protests caused several hours of disruption, leading to the cancellation of approximately 270 out of the 1,300 flights scheduled for that day.
Security concerns and future measures
The protests have sparked a debate on how to improve security at airports. Zieschang stated that such actions are becoming more common and are likely to continue. “It is absolutely impossible to protect an airport with kilometers of fences – you cannot build a new Berlin Wall,” he said.
Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, is surrounded by 30 kilometers of fencing. The security forces responded quickly to the incident, ensuring that no one was harmed, added the Fraport executive.
