After 118 years of operation, automotive supplier Recaro is shutting down production and undergoing liquidation. The traditional car seat manufacturer, known for its innovative sports seat designs, will close by the end of the year, affecting over 200 employees.
An insolvency administrator spokesperson in Kirchheim/Teck (Esslingen district) announced that while discussions with an investor are ongoing, the potential buyer has no interest in maintaining production. This development comes after the company, which recently generated nearly 50 million euros in revenue, attempted to restructure under self-administration but ultimately entered standard insolvency proceedings.
Impact on workforce and operations
The closure significantly impacts the company’s workforce:
- More than 200 employees are affected
- 135 workers have already been temporarily released
- 90 employees remain in production
According to the insolvency administration spokesperson, all employees will ultimately lose their jobs. The company cited the loss of a major contract as the primary reason for filing for insolvency several months ago.
Rich history and innovation
Founded on October 1, 1906 – almost exactly 118 years ago – Recaro specialized in innovative seating concepts for sports cars. The company’s designs were groundbreaking, with their “Reform Body” still considered the pioneer of modern convertibles. For decades, Recaro has been manufacturing car seats for sports vehicles, establishing a legacy of quality and innovation in automotive seating.
