Counterfeit money circulating in Regensburg: Mainly 200-euro notes
Regensburg – In the past week, the police in the Upper Palatinate, particularly in Regensburg, have received multiple reports of counterfeit banknotes. In a statement, the police now offer advice on handling counterfeit money.
Several counterfeit banknotes, mostly 200-euro notes, have been circulated in recent days. The police urge heightened vigilance when handling banknotes. Upon receiving a banknote, it should be briefly inspected using the method described below. If there are doubts about a banknote’s authenticity, the police should be notified immediately. According to the police, perpetrators often try to circulate counterfeit money by exchanging it.
If a counterfeit note is received, it should not be passed on or returned. Doing so risks punishment for spreading counterfeit money, the police warn. Counterfeit money should be handed over to the authorities, preferably in an envelope or paper bag. The counterfeit note should be touched by as few people as possible to preserve the perpetrator’s fingerprints.
Identifying counterfeit money: Holding against light is just one trick
Counterfeit money can be identified by touch: Feel the large denomination number on the note, the ECB abbreviation in the trapezoidal field should be palpable, and there should be a raised texture. Additionally, the police advise paying attention to the texture and firmness of the paper. Several tactile elements are also present on the front of the banknote.
Everyone knows this trick: Hold the note against the light, and watermarks, a hologram, and a security thread become visible. With a wrist tilt, other security features can be checked as well.
