An increasing number of people in Berlin are contracting ringworm due to poor hygiene practices in hair salons and barbershops.
In Berlin, skin and scalp infections caused by ringworm are becoming more common. The Neukölln district office advised customers to ensure that hair cutting tools, chair backs, and towels are disinfected or replaced after each use in hair salons and barbershops. The office emphasized, “You have the right to ask employees to do this if you have any doubts.”
The district has ordered regular inspections of barbershops and hair salons in Neukölln. The office will also promptly investigate reports from the public about significant hygiene violations or actual infections, as stated by district councilor Hannes Rehfeldt.
Potential for permanent hair loss
Ringworm (Trichophyton tonsurans) is contagious and often spreads through inadequately cleaned hair cutting tools like razors or trimmers or direct contact with an infected person. The infection can cause redness, itching, skin changes on the neck, scalp, and beard area, brittle hair, and flaky scalp.
People suspected of having an infection should see a dermatologist immediately. Severe cases can lead to permanent hair loss.
