A knife attack at a refugee shelter in Berlin-Marzahn on Tuesday night resulted in multiple injuries. Police were called to the scene on Bitterfelder Straße at around 10:40 p.m. after reports of serious bodily harm.
A 21-year-old resident of the shelter allegedly got into an argument with a 38-year-old visitor outside the building and physically assaulted him. A 62-year-old security guard attempted to intervene but was also attacked by the suspect, according to a report by t-online.de. The attacker then left the scene but encountered a group of 20 people in the courtyard, whom he reportedly assaulted and attacked with a knife.
According to police, the 38-year-old, the security guard, and five others were injured in the attack. The victims included a 15-year-old girl, two 20-year-old men, and two men aged 24 and 42. The two 20-year-olds sustained stab wounds and were hospitalized, while the other victims received medical treatment either at the scene or at a clinic. Initial media reports suggested that one person was critically injured.
The suspect was apprehended by responding officers. After complaining of chest pain, he was taken to a hospital before being placed in police custody. A specialized police unit has taken over the investigation, which is still ongoing.
