Two victims of the bus stabbing attack in Siegen remain in critical condition. It has now been revealed that three Muslim women likely prevented further tragedy.
When Herbert Reul (CDU), the Minister of the Interior for North Rhine-Westphalia, heard the news, he remarked that it is “apparently not as simple as we sometimes discuss the problems.” Reul had just arrived in Siegen to attend a church service and speak with the police after the bloody knife attack on a bus during the city’s festival.
He learned that the 32-year-old woman who went on a rampage in the bus on Friday evening, severely injuring three people, was likely stopped only because three brave and determined Muslim mothers intervened.
Mothers became heroines out of fear for their children
According to the “Westfalenpost,” the mothers were sitting with their small children in close proximity to the attacker. They were directly behind or beside her when she suddenly pulled out a knife and severely injured three young men aged 19, 21, and 23.
Overcome with fear for their children, the mothers acted heroically. They reportedly leapt at the 32-year-old, restrained her, and managed to disarm her.
“This society is much stronger than we think”
The mayor of Siegen, Steffen Mues (CDU), stated that he spoke with two of the women afterward, and they were still very shaken. One of the three mothers sustained significant injuries but has since been discharged from the hospital.
“When I learn that these citizens were of migrant backgrounds, I think that can make us a little proud,” said North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Reul. “This society is much stronger than we think.”
Two victims still fighting for their lives
Meanwhile, the police have released updates on the critically injured. The 23-year-old is now out of immediate danger, but doctors are still fighting to save the lives of the 19-year-old and the 21-year-old.
The district court of Siegen has issued an arrest warrant for the 32-year-old attacker at the request of the public prosecutor’s office. Reports suggest that the woman may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs and may have suffered from a mental illness.
A total of six people were injured in the attack. Three of them were treated and released on Friday after receiving outpatient care.
