A new study has found that Cologne ranks as the second-worst city in Germany for health value. The study focused on the availability of facilities for a healthy lifestyle, not the local food habits.
A study conducted by the online medical practice “Zava” has revealed that Cologne is the city with the second-worst health value in Germany. According to the study, only Duisburg has worse health metrics. Importantly, the study did not evaluate the eating habits of Cologne’s residents but instead assessed the availability of resources for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The researchers considered factors such as the number of sports centers and swimming pools in each city, as well as the amount of green space per 100,000 inhabitants. They also examined the number of hiking trails and the air quality in these cities.
Cologne has a deficiency in hiking trails
Although air quality in Cologne is significantly better than in Duisburg, the city falls short in other areas. Cologne ranks third-lowest nationwide in terms of green space per capita (47 per 100,000 residents) and also lags behind in the number of sports centers (17 per 100,000 residents) and swimming pools (ten per 100,000 residents). Furthermore, Cologne has only 176 hiking trails per 100,000 residents, the lowest number among the ten cities at the bottom of the ranking.
At the top of the ranking is Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg. According to this study, Heilbronn boasts the highest number of swimming pools per capita (470 per 100,000 residents) and the most hiking trails per capita (5,811 per 100,000 residents). Heilbronn also ranks second nationwide for green space per capita (611 per 100,000 residents).
